Why Video Gallery Block?

Video Gallery Block is a WordPress video gallery plugin that lets you create responsive video galleries, YouTube galleries, Vimeo galleries, and video collections directly inside the Gutenberg block editor. It loads its scripts only on pages that use it and needs no jQuery.

Organize videos into albums, let visitors filter by category, and play everything in an elegant lightbox popup. Thumbnails are generated automatically (or upload your own poster images), and captions keep every video labeled.

The Pro version adds 31 more video blocks (most of them also play Wistia), live streams, view counts and advanced layouts like sliders, carousels, masonry grids, and playlist galleries – ideal for video portfolios, product galleries, training libraries, and course videos.

Included Free

Things many video gallery plugins keep for a paid plan, all in the free Video Gallery block:

  • Automatic channel feeds: point it at a YouTube channel or playlist, or a Vimeo profile, channel, group or showcase, and new videos appear by themselves.
  • Video SEO markup: Schema.org VideoObject JSON-LD for every video.
  • GDPR consent (off by default): turn it on under Privacy & SEO, and no YouTube, Vimeo or Facebook player loads, and no third-party cookie is set, until the visitor agrees.
  • Google Analytics 4 video events: play, 25%, 50%, 75% and finished, with the video’s title.
  • Thumbnails served from your own site: no request to YouTube or Vimeo on every page view.

Fast by Design

  • No jQuery, no Isotope: about 120 KB less JavaScript on the front end than older versions of this plugin.
  • Rendered on the server: search engines and visitors see the gallery instantly, and it still works on sites that delay JavaScript (WP Rocket, LiteSpeed, Perfmatters).
  • Loads only when used: scripts and styles are added only on pages that contain the block, and a video loads its player only when someone plays it.
  • Thumbnails from your own site: YouTube and Vimeo thumbnails are cached in your Media Library, so there is no request to YouTube or Vimeo on every page view.

Free Features

Everything below is part of the free Video Gallery block.

Watch how a YouTube or Vimeo channel fills the gallery by itself:

  • Responsive Video Gallery Block: Clean grid layouts that automatically adapt to desktop, tablet, and mobile screens.
  • Album & Filter System: Organize videos into albums and let visitors filter by category.
  • Responsive Column Layouts: Set different column numbers for desktop, tablet, and mobile.
  • Multiple Video Sources: Add videos from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and your own video files from the Media Library (Wistia is available in most Pro blocks).
  • Custom Styling Controls: Adjust spacing, padding, borders, backgrounds, and shadows from the block settings.
  • Automatic or Custom Thumbnails: Auto-generate thumbnails or upload custom poster images.
  • Video Captions: Add captions or titles to each video in the gallery.
  • Lightbox Video Popup: Play videos in an elegant popup lightbox.
  • Bulk Import: Paste a list of video links, one per line, and the gallery fills itself in — titles and posters come from YouTube and Vimeo automatically, with no API key to set up.
  • Thumbnail Shape: Lay tiles out as 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 or 9:16 for vertical Shorts and Reels, instead of a fixed pixel height.
  • Ready-Made Section Patterns: Five fully configured patterns in the inserter — Video gallery with album filters, Course video library, Product demo showcase, Customer video stories, and Portfolio showreel wall — so you start from a finished layout, not a blank block.
  • Show / Hide Filter Bar: A dedicated toggle to show or hide the album filter buttons.
  • Load More Pagination: Set how many videos show at first; a Load More button reveals the rest, so a large gallery doesn’t overwhelm the page on first paint.
  • YouTube Shorts Filter: Show every video, hide Shorts, or show only Shorts — detected from the link itself, no API key needed.
  • Play Icon on Thumbnails: A play icon over every tile, so it reads as a video before anyone hovers or clicks — color, size, and the hover zoom are all customizable, or turn it off entirely.
  • Item Border & Shadow: Round the corners and add a drop shadow to each thumbnail tile, independent of the gallery container’s own border and shadow.
  • Translation Ready: Fully compatible with multilingual websites.
  • Sort Order: Show videos in the order you added them, or automatically sort by Newest First / Oldest First — no need to re-order videos by hand after a Bulk Import.
  • Row Alignment: Control how a leftover row (one that doesn’t fill every column) lines up — left, center, or right — instead of it always being stretched or left stranded on one side.
  • Per-Device Column & Row Gap: Set the spacing between tiles separately for desktop, tablet, and mobile, the same way column counts already work per device.
  • Facebook Video Support: Add Facebook videos to the gallery alongside YouTube and Vimeo, using Facebook’s public embed — no app or API key required.
  • YouTube & Vimeo Channel Auto-Feed: Show a YouTube channel or playlist, or a Vimeo profile, channel, group or showcase. New uploads appear by themselves on the schedule you choose (hourly to daily), or click “Check now”. Vimeo needs no key; YouTube needs a free Data API key once, with step-by-step setup in the sidebar.
  • Feed Alerts: If a feed stops updating (a wrong or expired key, a used-up quota, a deleted playlist), administrators see a notice that says what is wrong and where to fix it, with an optional email.
  • Channel Name: Show the channel’s name under each title for YouTube and Vimeo feeds.
  • Play in Place: Play a video inside its own tile instead of the lightbox.
  • Add Many Videos at Once: Pick or upload many videos from the Media Library in one go, or drag video files from your computer — or YouTube and Vimeo links from another browser tab — straight onto the gallery.
  • Drag to Reorder: Drag videos on the canvas to change their order, or use the Move left / Move right buttons.
  • Copy a Feed to Your Own List: Turn a channel’s videos into your own list in one click, then reorder or edit them.
  • Easy, Step-by-Step Settings: Panels follow the order you work in — Video source, Videos, Layout, Display, Playback, Privacy & SEO — with buttons instead of long dropdowns.

What can I build with this Gutenberg video gallery plugin?

Video Gallery Block helps you create responsive video galleries, YouTube galleries, Vimeo galleries, and video collections directly in the Gutenberg editor.

Can I create a YouTube video gallery in WordPress?

Yes. The free version supports YouTube videos and lets you organize them into responsive video gallery layouts.

How do I show my latest YouTube videos automatically in WordPress?

In the block’s Video source panel choose YouTube / Vimeo, paste your channel or playlist link and pick how often to check (every hour up to once a day). New uploads then appear on their own. You can also click Check now. In Pro you can merge up to 10 channels or playlists, show up to 1,000 videos or a whole channel, and filter by title keywords.

Do I need a YouTube API key?

For a YouTube channel or playlist feed, yes: a free YouTube Data API key, set up once. The sidebar walks you through it step by step. Vimeo feeds need no key at all. Adding single videos by link, or many at once with Bulk Import, needs no key for either site.

Where do I get a YouTube API key?

It is free and takes about 2 minutes, once. 1) Sign in to Google Cloud and create a project (any name). 2) Open the YouTube Data API v3 page and click Enable. 3) Go to Credentials > Create credentials > API key and copy the key. 4) In the block’s Video source panel choose YouTube / Vimeo, paste the key and click Save. The sidebar shows the same steps with links, so you can follow them without leaving the editor. Prefer to watch? How to get a YouTube API key in 2 minutes (video).

Can I show live streams?

Yes, in Pro. It marks videos LIVE or Upcoming, puts live streams first, and can show a live player above the gallery that goes away when the stream ends.

Is it GDPR compliant? Does it set cookies before a video is played?

Turn on Ask before loading YouTube / Vimeo (GDPR) under Privacy & SEO. The player, and with it any third-party cookie, loads only after the visitor agrees, and the choice is remembered. YouTube and Vimeo thumbnails are served from your own site. In Pro this works in every block.

Does it work with WP Rocket, LiteSpeed or other “delay JavaScript” settings?

Yes. The gallery is built on the server, so it is visible straight away, and it starts correctly even when a performance plugin delays scripts.

Does it add video schema so my videos can appear in Google?

Yes. Each video gets Schema.org VideoObject markup. If your SEO plugin already does this, switch Video SEO markup off under Privacy & SEO.

Can I show only YouTube Shorts, or hide them?

Yes. Under Layout choose to show all videos, hide Shorts or show only Shorts. It also works for channel feeds.

Can I use it with Elementor or the classic editor?

Yes. Use the [video_gallery] shortcode, and the shortcode generator in the plugin dashboard, anywhere shortcodes work.

Can I create a Vimeo video gallery in WordPress?

Yes. Vimeo videos are supported and can be displayed in responsive video galleries.

Can I create a video playlist gallery in WordPress?

Yes. The Pro version includes a Playlist Video Gallery block with navigation and sequential video playback.

Can I create a video gallery without Elementor?

Yes. Video Gallery Block works directly inside the WordPress Gutenberg editor without requiring Elementor or other page builders.

Is Video Gallery Block free?

Yes. The free version includes responsive video galleries, YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook support, your own video files, YouTube and Vimeo channel feeds that update by themselves, albums, filters, thumbnails, captions, lightbox video popups, video SEO markup and GDPR consent. A Pro version is available with advanced layouts and features.

What extra features are included in Pro?

Pro adds 31 more video blocks (sliders, carousels, masonry, playlists, Shorts reels, course accordions and more), Grid / Cards / List / Showcase layouts, title position and length, live streams, view and like counts, preview on hover, actions when a video ends, more channels and up to 1,000 videos in one feed, channel feeds in 20 more blocks, GDPR consent in every block, a choice of video player, Wistia videos in most Pro blocks, and advanced typography controls.

Will the gallery slow down my site?

No. Scripts load only when the block is used, and videos load their data only when played, reducing bandwidth and CPU usage while keeping scrolling smooth.

Does it work with any WordPress theme?

Yes. It is compatible with all modern WordPress themes.

Can I customize the gallery design?

Yes. Free users can customize layout and basic styling. Pro users get advanced design controls.

Can I create multiple video galleries?

Yes. You can create unlimited galleries across your site.

Is it mobile-friendly?

Yes. The gallery is fully responsive, and you can set different column counts per device.

Can I use my own video files?

Yes. The free version plays your own video files (MP4, WebM) as well as YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook. Use “Add from Media Library” to add many at once, or drag the files onto the gallery. Wistia videos are supported in most Pro blocks.

How do I get support?

Free users can use the WordPress.org support forum. Pro users receive priority email support.

User-Friendly and Straightforward Plugin

This plugin is incredibly easy to use and straightforward. I really appreciate its simplicity and effectiveness. Highly recommended!

Great plugin

By twestermann on December 10, 2023

With some minor tweaks (a center function) then it could become awesome!

Could be a great tool if it was a little more user friendly

By spanky126 on November 2, 2023

Could be a great tool for posting media items if it was just a little user friendly. I added 20 videos to a page and not one of them shows the caption or title. What good is that? My site is contains videos(500K, images(100K and stories(200K). Needless to say, that having a solid, reliable and user friendly content management system is mandatory. I have been trying to launch my site for two years now and have even hired a developer to fix the site and that is not working out so good. I have yet to find a decent plugin that can create directory lists and keep the categories/tags straight. I add content and shortly afterwards it disappears. I fix one problem and another one shows up.

How is it possible that plugins are available that haven’t been tested with all versions of WP. The ramifications caused by an incompatible plug-in are endless. I spend 90% of my time reading help files and support forums and always come up empty handed. Questions are asked but never answered and are so old that they are no longer relevant. I must say there is one thing about WordPress that is executed very efficiently and that is BILLING. If only the energy and attention to detail that billing utilizes was directed towards the user experience this might be a worthy platform. The jury is still out on that, sadly.

I am sure someone is thinking that this is not the appropriate place to post this comment and I apologize for that. I am at the end of my rope now and am ready to surrender for the first time in my life. YOU WIN WORDPRESS!

The Video Galley is working well, and filter albums was lit! The only thing was missing is the Caption or Title of every Videos. Hoping next update, the developer will put this suggestion. 5 stars for this plugin

Awesome Video Gallery

By silperman on November 5, 2022

It is easy to use and has a very nice look, and it is also possible to create categories for the videos and filter them.

Super easy and good looking

By grahamjhall on September 27, 2022

This is great – took me ages to find it – but after I did I removed all my other video galleries as they were no longer needed because this was the best.

1.7.0 – 28 October 2026

  • Security: Hardened video links and captions in the Video Gallery block. A video title or caption can no longer run script when the lightbox opens, whether the gallery video is opened from the page or from the editor. Thanks to Patchstack for the report.
  • New: Show a YouTube channel or playlist, or a Vimeo profile, channel, group or showcase, as a gallery. New uploads appear by themselves. Vimeo needs no key. YouTube needs a free YouTube Data API key once, with step-by-step setup in the sidebar.
  • New: Choose how often the gallery checks for new videos (every hour, 6 hours, 12 hours or once a day), or click “Check now”. If YouTube or Vimeo can’t be reached, the last videos stay on the page.
  • New: Paste a single video’s link and the gallery offers that creator’s whole channel.
  • New: The YouTube Shorts option (all videos, hide Shorts, only Shorts) also works for channel feeds.
  • New: Play in place. A video can play inside its own tile instead of the lightbox (YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and video files), one at a time.
  • New: Feed alerts. When a feed stops updating, for example because of a wrong or expired API key, a used-up daily quota or a deleted playlist, administrators see a notice saying what is wrong and where to fix it. It can be hidden for a day, sent by email if you turn that on, and goes away by itself once the feed works again.
  • New: Show the channel name under each title for YouTube and Vimeo feeds.
  • New: “Add from Media Library”: pick or upload many videos at once.
  • New: Drag video files from your computer, or YouTube and Vimeo links from another tab, onto the gallery to add them.
  • New: “Copy these videos to My videos” turns a feed’s videos into your own list, to reorder and edit.
  • New: Drag videos on the canvas to reorder them, or use the Move left / Move right buttons.
  • Improvement: Clearer settings. Panels follow the order you work in (Video source, Videos, Layout, Display, Playback, Privacy & SEO), feed setup is a set of short steps, and short dropdowns are now buttons.
  • Improvement: YouTube thumbnails use the best size that exists for each video, and the live page now shows the same thumbnail as the editor instead of a cropped, blurrier one.
  • Improvement: Video SEO markup gives feed videos their real publish date.
  • Improvement: When “delete data on uninstall” is on, deleting the plugin also removes the YouTube API key and the cached feeds.
  • Fix: Full-width galleries no longer stick out past the edge of the page in classic themes such as Hello Elementor, on computers with a visible scrollbar.
  • Fix: The upgrade (checkout) window opens again; it could fail with a 520 error.
  • Fix: The lightbox no longer keeps following the mouse after the button is released outside the window.
  • Fix: Google Analytics never received 25/50/75% progress or video_watch_complete for Vimeo videos.
  • Fix: The lightbox no longer conflicts with other plugins that also load Fancybox.
  • Security: Hardened block CSS output.

1.6.0 – 13 October 2026

  • Update: Freemius SDK updated to 2.13.5.
  • Fix: After activating the plugin, the page no longer says you are not allowed to access it. The Freemius opt-in now opens first, then the first page of the plugin.

1.5.4 – 6 October 2026

  • New: Video play events for Google Analytics. A video now sends video_play when a visitor presses play, and video_watch_progress at 25, 50 and 75 percent and video_watch_complete when they finish. Works with files, YouTube and Vimeo. Facebook videos only report that they were opened.
  • New: Video events are also sent straight to Google Analytics when gtag.js is on the page, for example with Site Kit. Google Tag Manager is no longer needed.
  • Fix: Facebook Reel links now open as Facebook videos.

1.5.3 – 15 September 2026

  • Fix — Editor Hover Tooltip Visibility. Fixed an issue where the tooltip for the first row of videos in the gallery would be clipped by Gutenberg’s block boundaries.
  • Fix — Editor Selection Border. Fixed an issue where the blue selection outline would be hidden behind poster images in the editor.

1.5.2 – 12 September 2026

  • New — Animated Album Filtering. Switching album filters now features smooth FLIP layout transitions (sliding into position, fade-in, and scale effects) without relying on jQuery or external libraries like Isotope.
  • New — Editor Interaction & Double-Click Preview. In the Gutenberg editor, single-clicking a video thumbnail selects it for editing in the sidebar, while double-clicking opens the lightbox preview directly.
  • Fix — Editor Hover Tooltip Visibility. Fixed an issue where the editor interaction hint tooltip (“Click to select · Double-click to preview”) was clipped and hidden by thumbnail overflow rules.

1.5.1 – 9 September 2026

  • New — Sort Order. Show the gallery in the order you added the videos, or set it to Newest First / Oldest First and let the block keep it sorted automatically — useful after a Bulk Import, where re-ordering dozens of videos by hand was the alternative.
  • New — Row Alignment. When the last row of a gallery doesn’t fill every column, it can now be aligned left, center, or right instead of being left stretched to one side by default.
  • New — Per-Device Column & Row Gap. Column Gap and Row Gap are now set separately for desktop, tablet, and mobile, matching how the column count already worked per device.
  • New — Facebook Video Support. Facebook videos can be added to a gallery alongside YouTube and Vimeo. Playback uses Facebook’s public embed player, which needs no app registration or API key — unlike Facebook’s oEmbed API, which does.
  • New — GDPR Consent-Gated Embeds. An “Require Consent Before Playing” option shows a consent overlay in place of the player until a visitor agrees, so no third-party YouTube/Vimeo/Facebook cookie is set before that. The choice is remembered in the visitor’s browser.
  • New — Google Analytics 4 Video Tracking. A “Send Video Play Events to Google Analytics” option pushes a video_start event to window.dataLayer — with the video’s title, provider (YouTube/Vimeo/Facebook/other), and URL — every time a visitor opens a video. Works with GA4 or Google Tag Manager already installed on the site; nothing else to configure.
  • New — Cached Thumbnails. YouTube and Vimeo thumbnails are now downloaded into your Media Library the first time they’re needed and served from your own site after that. Every visitor’s browser used to fetch them straight from YouTube or Vimeo on every page view; that’s now one request, ever, per video, and a thumbnail can never 404 again just because a provider reshuffled its sizes. Warms up gradually — at most one new thumbnail is cached per page view, so a gallery full of uncached videos never turns a single visit into a dozen downloads at once.
  • New — Load More Pagination. A “Videos Per Page” setting under Layout Settings starts the gallery with that many tiles and reveals the rest, a page at a time, behind a Load More button. Off by default (0 = show everything, unchanged from before) so no existing gallery’s appearance changes on upgrade.
  • New — YouTube Shorts Filter. An Options-panel control to show every video, hide Shorts, or show only Shorts — useful once Bulk Import has pulled in a mixed batch. Shorts are recognised from the link itself, so this needs no API key and no per-video tagging.
  • New — Play Icon on Thumbnails. A small play icon now sits over every tile by default, so a gallery reads as video content before anyone hovers or clicks — can be turned off under Options. Once it’s on, Style Item lets you set its color, background, size, and how much it zooms in on hover (or turn that zoom off entirely).
  • New — Item Border & Shadow. Style Item now has the same Border and Shadow controls the overall gallery box already had, but for each individual tile — rounded corners and a drop shadow on the thumbnails themselves, not just the gallery container.
  • Fix — Filter button active/hover colors. The “Button Hover/Active Colors” control under Style Filter had no effect on the active (“current”) filter button and, on the Load More button, could leave the hover color applied permanently instead of only on hover. Both now behave as the labels say.
  • Fix — Custom player controls in the lightbox. Videos opened in the lightbox now consistently get the plugin’s Plyr-based player controls instead of occasionally falling back to the browser’s default video controls.

1.5.0 – 7 September 2026

  • New — Bulk Import. Paste a list of video links, one per line, and the whole gallery is built: each video arrives with its title and poster already filled in, resolved through WordPress own oEmbed proxy so there is no API key to obtain and no third-party service involved. Duplicate links and lines that are not links are skipped and reported rather than silently added. Adding twenty videos was sixty fields of typing; it is now one paste.
  • New — Thumbnail Shape. Tiles can be 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 or 9:16 instead of a fixed pixel height, so vertical Shorts and Reels stop being cropped to a letterbox. Importing a gallery made entirely of Shorts links sets 9:16 on its own. Galleries built before this option keep the exact height they had.
  • New — Video SEO markup, in the free version. Each video in a gallery is now described to search engines with Schema.org VideoObject JSON-LD: title, thumbnail, publish date and the player URL. It is what lets a gallery show up as a video result rather than as an unreadable grid, and it is the same markup AI search reads. Every comparable free plugin sells this as a premium feature. There is a Video SEO markup toggle under Options for sites whose SEO plugin already does it.
  • Only videos that have a caption and a fetchable thumbnail are described — an invented title is worse for a site than no markup at all. Pasting a YouTube or Vimeo URL fills the caption in automatically, so this usually needs no work.
  • Fixed: a gallery placed with the [video_gallery] shortcode had its SEO markup stripped, because the shortcode ran the whole rendered gallery through wp_kses_post(), which allows no <script> at all. The shortcode now checks the block it is rendering instead, which is the stricter half of what that filter was standing in for.
  • The gallery is now rendered by the server, not built from scratch in the browser after the page loads. Search engines see the videos, thumbnails and captions; the space where the gallery goes is no longer blank while the page waits on JavaScript; and a gallery still works as a list of video links if that JavaScript never arrives.
  • Fixed: the gallery never appeared on sites that delay JavaScript. The block only ever listened for DOMContentLoaded, which performance plugins (WP Rocket’s “Delay JavaScript execution”, LiteSpeed, Perfmatters) run scripts after. On those sites visitors saw an empty space.
  • Fixed: tablet and mobile column counts. Items kept a pixel gutter that the responsive rules did not account for, so each was wider than the column it had to fit — a gallery set to two columns on tablet rendered one.
  • Fixed: album filters broke for any album name that was not plain English. Album classes were slugified from the name, which dropped every Bengali, Cyrillic, Arabic and CJK character and produced an invalid selector; names starting with a digit did too, and names that slugified alike (“Music Videos” and “music-videos”) collided. Albums are now identified by position.
  • Fixed: broken YouTube thumbnails. The block always asked for maxresdefault.jpg, which does not exist for every video. Thumbnails now step down through the sizes YouTube actually has.
  • Vimeo thumbnails. Pasting a Vimeo URL now fills in the title and the poster, the same as YouTube. Existing Vimeo videos have their thumbnail resolved on the server and cached.
  • Fixed: captions with formatting showed the visitor literal <b> tags.
  • Fixed: one broken gallery took down every other gallery on the page.
  • Fixed: galleries appeared in the site’s own search results, and following the result landed on the front page. The Video Gallery post type is admin-only now; nothing about editing changes.
  • Fixed: closing a lightbox could break other galleries — and any other plugin using the same lightbox — on the same page. The lightbox also opens over the page now rather than inside the gallery, so themes can no longer clip it.
  • Fixed: the editor’s Get Premium link never pointed at the local pricing screen, and the editor never loaded its translations. Both were attached to a script handle that does not exist (vgb-video-gallery-block-editor-script rather than vgb-video-gallery-editor-script).
  • Added: a Show Filter Bar toggle. The setting existed in the block’s data but was never read, and there was no control for it.
  • Removed jQuery and Isotope from the front end (about 120 KB less JavaScript). Filtering is no longer silently dead on sites that defer or dequeue jQuery, and the front-end layout now matches the editor.
  • Thumbnails are lazy-loaded and carry alt text; filter buttons and thumbnail links carry accessible labels.
  • Video URLs are looked up through WordPress’s own oEmbed proxy instead of a third-party service the site owner never agreed to.
  • Fixed a stray align class on every gallery, a stylesheet rule that forced the dashicons font onto unrelated elements on the front end, and two galleries on one page overriding each other’s poster fit.

  • Introduced a redesigned admin dashboard with an improved user experience.
  • Performance: Greatly improved page performance when several video blocks are used on the same page.
  • Performance: Videos no longer load data in the background — they now load only when played (on hover or click), reducing bandwidth and CPU usage and keeping scrolling smooth.
  • Parallax Row Video Gallery: Fixed scroll stuttering by switching the parallax effect to GPU-accelerated, requestAnimationFrame-based updates and rendering posters instead of video elements until played.
  • Video Carousel Gallery: Cards now show a poster image and load the video only on hover; off-screen videos are fully released.
